Hi everyone! I sincerely apologize for being absent unexpectedly today. My little girl is sick and I have to stay home with her. Watch this video on the history of watercolors and answer the following questions.
1. What region did watercolors originate in Europe?
2. How long ago did watercolors come about?
3. What is topographic art?
4. What is plein air painting and why are watercolors a good choice for this? (you may have to google plein air painting)
5. How did the industrial revolution impact the watercolor world? What became much more accessible?
6. How many watercolor kits were sold during the Victorian era?
7. What technique is she using to start her painting? (about 15 minutes in)
8. Even a professional artist (oil painter) is struggling with watercolor to learn how much water to control in her brush. She is learning through just experimenting and trial and error... this is essentially the process we just did to help prepare you for your final paintings. Did you find the painting tutorials to be helpful? Do you feel more prepared to start final paintings?

Last week we looked at one speed painter from Europe. Today we are looking at American Speed Painter, Amy Burkman. Attached is her website for additional information if you find her mission interesting. The second attachment is a video. Watch the video and answer the following questions:
1. Amy had a full time job before she started to pursue painting as a full time profession. What major life event happened that made her change her career?
2. What was her mission? What did she want to raise money for? (There are several things)
3. How much money has she donated to charities?
4. How long does it take for her to finish one painting (approximately)?
5. Do you like her work? What do you like about it? (or dislike?)
6. Amy Burkman mentions in the video that we can all use our gifts for good...What do you think she means by that?
Respond in either a google doc, or if you prefer to write your responses on paper and then snap a picture of the paper to submit. As always, let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything!

M.C. Escher was one of our featured artists for the metamorphosis unit. I have selected two of his famous works here. There are short animated videos of each of these works (to see better how he defied gravity). Answer the following questions of each work:
M.C. ESCHER: Artwork - Relativity (1st video attached is an animated version)
1. What date was this artwork completed?
2. What medium did he use? (ex. graphite, woodblock print, etc)
3. What do you find most interesting about this work?
4. What is one interesting fact about this piece?
M.C. Escher: Artwork - Waterfall (2nd video explains how the illusion works with a 3D Model, similar to what I showed you with the impossible triangle)

2. What medium did he use?
3. What do you find most interesting about this work?

Today is an unexpected absence, so therefore you will not be able to work on your sculptures. I'm sorry!
For today, you will watch this TED Talk on your video and draw along with the tutorials. You will draw several cartoons (it can be on one paper or a few). Take a photo of your work at the end of the day and submit it on this assignment by uploading your photo. (You may have to e-mail the photo to your HC account, save it, and then upload).
Around 10 minutes into the TED Talk, he talks about his experience working with patients who have suffered from a stroke. What do you think about his experience? What do you think the people gained most from his drawing lesson? (Written answers can be on the same page as the drawing or submitted in a doc on this assignment).
This last quote: "How many other beliefs and limiting thoughts do we all carry around with us everyday. Beliefs that we could potentially challenge and think differently about. If we did challenge those beliefs and think differently about them, apart from drawing, what else would be possible for us all?"
Personally, that last quote really resonates! Do you find that quote to be meaningful or personal? Can you relate?

Check out this video. Notice how the smaller the pieces and parts the more impressive the whole sculpture is!
