Safety tips for students learning at home & parents/guardians of at home learners

The ABC’s of staying safe at home:

  • Awareness

*Parents/Guardians, be aware of where your child sets up virtual learning (do not be online in private places within your home- such as the restroom)

*Remember to turn off microphones/cameras when you’re not learning online

  • Be Safe

*Cooking safety- if a fire starts in a pan calmly place a lid on the pan and turn off the heat (do not throw water on the pan).

*General safety- have a first aid kit handy for your child to access if needed

*Talk to your child about when to answer the phone/ or if they should just let it ring

*Talk to your child about answering the door. It’s a good idea to tell them not to answer the door when you are not at home.

*Designate a safe place in the house where they can go if they feel in danger

*Designate a safe place outside of the house or with a nearby neighbor in the event that they have to leave home for safety reasons

*Hide and secure dangerous household items (medications, firearms)

*Contact your child at least once a day to check in

*Monitor their social media accounts

*Have an emergency call list for your child to refer to while you’re at work

*Make sure your child knows the home address- write it down and display it where they can see it

*Teach your child about contacting 911 in case of an emergency. Teach them to stay calm and be able to give their address, phone number and the information about what is going on with the emergency

*Remember: Your HC School Counselors are here for you. If you need help with social/emotional, academic, or career planning please reach out to Mrs. Lieb at the elementary, Mrs. Curci at the High School, Mr. Krejocic K-12
