Cooking and Nutrition Elective

Cooking and Nutrition is a one-semester elective course designed to provide experience and educate students on matters of a healthy diet and food preparation. The lessons and activities presented are mainly based on the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Family and Consumer Sciences Food Science and Nutrition category, but will also include lessons geared by the focal points of sharing family responsibilities and financial management. Lessons and activities may include the topics of: nutrition in detail, essential nutrients review, My Plate, food and kitchen safety, table setting, formal dining etiquette, reading and developing recipes, how to make a food healthier, shopping on a budget, comparison grocery shopping, and more, along with preparing and consuming a wide variety of multiple foods/meals. Students should have already completed the mandated FCS course as a pre-requisite before enrolling in this elective.
